RISOGRAPH new tools for your expression
Prof. Yasushi Nagahara
Dept. of Information Design, Tama Art University
RISOGRAPH as educational material
We offer a program called Project Based Learning (PBL) in Tama Art University. AS part of the program, we collaborate with private companies and studios to learn the process of personal publishing. Students exhibit their works which are made by RISOGRAPH in TOKYO ART BOOK FAIR at the end of the program.
Various expressive styles
To me, the RISOGRAPH has been familiar since I had mimeograph printing experience in my elementary school. My students also knew the products though they did not know the exact name Risograph and they longed for using them. Depend on how you manipulate the machine, you can produce art works which are close to fine lithograph or old-school style mimeograph printing. Though we prefer high resolution in many aspects, it does not matter when it comes to expression. By using ones ingenuity, possibility of expression increases drastically. Laying over a color on another is one example. The point is, I would like the others to know the RISOGRAPH has such potentials.

ZINEs made by students. Each one of them had individuality.
RISO ART STUDIO in Japan

Reproduce of ZINEs
Mr. Shinsuke Kanno, Hand Saw Press
Hand Saw Press is a RISOGRAPH&DIY Studio located in Musashi-koyama, Tokyo. Mr. Kanno was in charge of reproducing ZINEs 100PAGES/5ZINES which were created in the TOKYO ART BOOK FAIR (2009). It was a tough job to reproduce the works which were created ten years ago because I had to consider the machine settings such as print mode, density, halftone dot and many like. Sometimes discontinued inks were used, so I struggled to reproduce them by laying over inks. It was a really good opportunity to think about what does reproduce mean.

I love making books with the RISOGRAPH because I can actually feel the art piece by turning pages. I want to try to make more new colors by laying over colors.

Limited kind of ink colors is the key. Since there are needs to think design and things out, we can produce nice pieces of art works. In addition, easy operated machine helps us a lot.
